What is an Airsoft Gun?

Airsoft guns are replica firearms, classified as toy guns, that fire non-metal, non-lethal bullets. Airsoft guns are a relatively recent phenomenon in the United States. They are very realistic reproductions of military and police firearms.

Often the only give away that the weapon is a low-powered airsoft gun and not a heavy-caliber assault weapon is the distinctive bright orange tip at the end of the barrel. It is illegal to import or to manufacture an airsoft gun in the U.S. without the distinguishing orange tip.

Airsoft guns were first manufactured in Japan but have gained in popularity in the United States in recent years. The most important and most obvious difference between Airsoft hobbyist guns and their more lethal cousins is the lower velocity of the projectiles that the replica weapons fire. Usually, the bullets in an airsoft gun are made of plastic and travel at a fraction of the speed of other bullets. This allows for hobbyists to stage battles using weaponry that will not break the skin.

Airsoft guns use either compressed gas or a spring-loaded mechanism to fire their pellets and there are a wide variety of guns available. For the most part, airsoft guns are safe for general use as the softer projectiles and lower velocities make for reasonably safe recreational use. It is recommended that any user should be at least 18 years old and wear, minimally, protection for the eyes. The use of airsoft guns is somewhat controversial but the incidences of severe injury appear to be, at least anecdotally, lower than with paintball guns.
