The Airsoft Movement?
Back in the day, I remember taking a 5 gallon bucket, turning it upside down, and constructing a pyramid of empty soda cans on top. Then I’d load up my bb gun and have target practice in the back yard. Fast forward to current times and there are some new guns in town.
Airsoft guns are somewhat similar to the old-time bb guns, but with some major differences. The Airsoft guns are constructed to replicate actual firearms, as closely as possible. The old metal bb’s have been replaced with plastic versions. Most noticeably, Airsoft guns are the central piece of equipment for an entire gaming movement.
Now there are complete facilities designed to house Airsoft tournaments. There are teams formed, and combat to be experienced! Of course there are careful safety precautions designed to keep all of the thrill and minimize the danger. Protective eyewear is key, ranging from goggles, to full coverage masks. Most players also wear special vests and gloves. The plastic bb’s from an Airsoft gun travel at speeds slow enough to allow opposing teams to literally shoot at each other. Of course, that doesn’t mean you won’t feel it, especially at close range! (Shooting at close range is NEVER recommended). Sounds like an adrenaline rush to me, chasing and being chased. This takes the meaning of ‘target practice’ to a whole new level.
In the end, if you’re still just looking for target practice with a target that doesn’t move, feel free to flip over your 5 gallon bucket and build your pyramid. Then pull out your Airsoft gun, and fire away. The bb’s are cheaper, and some even claim to be biodegradable! Green target practice anyone?
