Airsoft Power and Damage
The damage that airsoft is capable of making depends on the firepower of the gun and the range or distance of how far away the person who is shot is from the shooter.
Firepower is also known as FPS in a gun. Most airsoft guns are capable of 150 FPS to 450 FPS. Some people like to upgrade their guns to an even higher firepower. This is possible by purchasing and upgrading the springs on the airsoft gun. However, only certain guns can be upgraded. The capability for upgrade of a gun is at 400fps to 600 fps.
If a gun as a hop-up unit present then it means the gun may have more range than a gun that does not have hop-up. Hop-up means that when the gun is fired it puts a backspin on the pellet and gives it a slight arc upward. The pellets may fall slightly short of the range of paintball guns but the arc gives them more range than they would usually have. Most airsoft playing fields have rules and regulations that are specific to the velocity that is allowed for each player, gun and position. Most upgraded airsoft guns are not allowed because they are too powerful.
When an airsoft gun is shot from close range it can do the most damage to human flesh and to whatever the target is. A very close-range shot on bare skin can commonly break the skin and cause it to bleed. This would be firepower with a velocity of over 400fps.
Most shots that are over 100 feet usually do not break the skin and cause bleeding. If the person is far enough away then they may not even feel getting hit by the pellet. Situations like this often make people think the person getting hit with the pellet is lying. However, far enough away they really cannot feel the pellet making contact. Usually, a marshal or a referee will determine that the person was indeed hit and therefore eliminated from the game.
In most cases, a shot from a pellet in an airsoft gun will at the most cause bruising when the distance apart from each other is more than 100 feet. The bruising will occur when appropriate padding is not used when playing the game.
Eye protection is extremely important when playing airsoft. The firepower and the distance do not matter when you are hit in the eye with a pellet from an airsoft gun. Severe injury can be caused when you are not wearing appropriate eye goggles. You should never remove your eye protection when you are on the playing field.
The damage a pellet can make when you are playing airsoft can be significant or it can be minor. You might not feel a pellet at all or it may break the skin. It usually depends on how far away the shooter and the recipient are from each other and the firepower of the gun. These factors will make a difference of how hard it hurts when you are shot.
